Fir real! Where to buy your Christmas tree
Time to untangle the fairy lights and haul in the Norwegian spruce. We've found the best local farms, from pick your own and potted firs, including one that supplied No10.
John Cockram Christmas Trees, Chulmleigh and Horwood
A family-run pick-your-own biz with two sites – 8 acres at Chulmleigh (only open on weekends) and an 11-acre site at Horwood, with good proximity for Barnstaple-dwellers, which is open 7 days a week from 28 November.
Haldon Christmas Tree Centre, Haldon Forest
Cut trees up to 17ft, grown by Dartmoor Christmas Trees (below). The decoration-filled cabin is closed this year but they will be selling stands, wreaths, lights, foliage and mistletoe. You can park up and go for a stomp in the woods afterwards too. Open 4th/5th and 11th/12th December only – 9am until 3:30pm.
Dartmoor Christmas Trees, 5/6 and 12/13 Dec
You need to book your time slot (one hour, one slot per car) to pick your tree here up in the heart of Dartmoor or if you’re feeling lazy, they do home delivery. Stands, lights, wreath, kindling and fuel also available. Plus, they say on the website – it’s no smoking and no dogs, and definitely no smoking dogs.
Marldon Christmas Trees, The North Pole, Paignton
Want your tree from the farm who supplied No 10 Downing Street this year? Yep, Marldon got the top job after being crowned Champion Tree Grower of the Year. Open every day until 5pm, 6pm on weekends, for a range of varieties, potted trees, mistletoe, wreaths and Xmas decs.
Cotley Farm Christmas, Whimple, nr Exeter
It’s a one-stop Christmas shop – pick your freshly-cut or potted tree, pat the reindeer, choose your wreath, buy a hamper and order your turkey. Christmas sorted! Just don’t forget to book your slot: it’s £5 per car reimbursed with your purchase). And you can grab a takeaway tea/coffee and cakes.
Ashburton Christmas Trees, Towerhill, Ashburton
Open every day for choose and cut, or click and collect on over 20 acres of Christmas Trees (3 foot to 12 foot Norway Spruce & Nordmann Firs). Dogs on leads welcome, plus they take cards and there’s no need to book. Simples.
North Devon Christmas Trees, Fremington, Barnstaple
Open daily and later than most – until 8pm each night (7pm on Sundays), here you can buy Nordman, Frasers and Norway spruce, wreaths grown and pre-cut from their plantation, and for every tree cut they plant another two. Plus – and this might come in useful for outdoor entertaining – they sell handmade picnic benches. Just add a brazier and lashings of hot toddy. Card payment preferred.
Pixton Woodlands, near Bampton, open Weds-Sun
This farm just grows the Nordmann Fir, the classic non-drop but there’s more choice when it comes to buying – either in person where you choose a pre-cut tree or pick one fresh for cutting, or buy online and they will deliver to you for free. No need to book your visit.
Connetts Farm, Dunkeswell, nr Honiton
After a big ‘un? Nick at Connetts Farm grow everything from bargains, to premium 40ft’ers, while partner Heather is a dab hand on the garlands and wreaths. You can also pick up eggs, logs, straw, jams and chutneys. Open until 8.30am-7pm every day, or if that doesn’t suit (you’re a busy bee!) by appointment.
