Get sprucing! Where to buy your Christmas tree

It’s nearly December and that means it’s time to drag a 7ft tree into the house and cover it with sparkly plastic! Here are 7 local farms to choose from.

It’s that time of year to dig out the decorations. And not a moment too soon because lord knows, we all need some cheering up. So make a space in the corner of your living room, unearth the tinsel in the loft and make a three-hour window in your diary to untangle your fairy lights. Go via the cash-point, as most are cash or cheque only. Christmas trees are a-coming!

John Cockram Christmas Trees, Chulmleigh and Horwood

A family-run pick-your-own biz with two sites – 8 acres at Chulmleigh (only open on weekends) and a new 11-acre site at Horwood, with good proximity for Barnstaple-dwellers, which is open 7 days a week from 28 November.

Haldon Christmas Tree Centre, Haldon Forest

Cut trees up to 17ft, grown by Dartmoor Christmas Trees (below). The decoration-filled cabin is closed this year but they will be selling stands, wreaths, lights, foliage and mistletoe. You can park up and go for a stomp in the woods afterwards too.

Dartmoor Christmas Trees, 5/6 and 12/13 Dec

You need to book your slot (one hour, one slot per car) to pick your tree here up in the heart of Dartmoor or if you’re feeling lazy, they do home delivery. Stands, lights, wreath, kindling and fuel also available. Plus, they say on the website – it’s no smoking and no dogs, and definitely no smoking dogs.

Cotley Farm Christmas, Whimple, nr Exeter

It’s a one-stop Christmas shop – pick your freshly-cut or potted tree, pat the reindeer, choose your wreath, buy a hamper and order your turkey. Christmas sorted! Just don’t forget to book your slot: it’s free on weekdays or £6 on weekends (£5 reimbursed with your tree purchase). And you can grab a takeaway tea/coffee and cakes.

Ashburton Christmas Trees, Towerhill, Ashburton

Love a Xmas selfie? Tag yourself in a photo at this social-media savvy farm on Instagram/Facebook @ashburtonchristmastrees and they’ll give you £5 off a 5ft+ Nordmann Fir or £2.50 off 5ft+ Norway Spruce. Open every day for choose and cut, or click and collect. Dogs on leads welcome, plus they take cards and there’s no need to book. Simples.

North Devon Christmas Trees, Fremington, Barnstaple

Open daily and later than most – until 8pm each night (7pm on Sundays), here you can buy Nordman, Frasers and Norway spruce, wreaths grown and pre-cut from their plantation. Plus – and this might come in useful for outdoor Tier 2 entertaining – they sell their handmade picnic benches. Just add a brazier and lashings of hot toddy. Card payment preferred.

Pixton Woodlands, near Bampton, open Weds-Sun

This farm just grows the Nordmann Fir, the classic non-drop but there’s more choice when it comes to buying – either in person where you choose a pre-cut tree or pick one fresh for cutting, or buy online and they will deliver to you for free. No need to book your visit.
