Our Favourite Places
Heading to Salcombe this summer? When in town, tap up the locals for some insider knowledge. Oh look, we just did!
These three ladies work at the award-winning holiday company Coast & Country Cottages, based in the heart of town. I’m not really sure how they manage to actually get any work done, but their fingers are definitely On.The.Pulse when it comes to seeking out all the best places to eat, drink, shop and stroll in this beaut of a town…and beyond.
Over to you, ladies – share all you know!
Favourite place to watch the world go by with a coffee
There are so many fab places – we love the Winking Prawn at North Sands in Salcombe, where you can just sit outside with your morning coffee or a drink after work and admire the views. In the summer they also do the most fantastic barbecues in the evenings.
After work, we really enjoy going to South Milton Sands for a drink at The Beach House, and to watch the sun set over Thurlestone Rock. It’s such a peaceful setting, perching on the benches outside.
Our favourite walk has to be the route from Thurlestone to Hope Cove. Set off along the coast path enjoying the scenery, stop in the fishing village of Hope Cove for a drink at The Cove Café Bar, and then head back again. It’s a lovely, picturesque walk, and it only takes around 30 minutes each way.
The footpath around Starehole Bay in Salcombe is also very pretty. This feels like a pretty good moment to mention that we’ve created a South Devon Walking Guide, filled with suggestions and tips on exploring this area on foot – we use it all the time for walk inspiration!
Any fabulous boutique finds?
Will Bees Bespoke bags are exceptional. They are handmade on Island Street in Salcombe, and they make a really special gift, as each product is personalised with a leather embossed plaque. New collections are often launched, and their range includes everything from coin purses and clutch bags to cosmetic bags. The shop is just down the road from our office in Salcombe, so we often pop in during our lunch break to see the latest styles and fabrics [and probably spend too much money].
Our favourite beach
East Portlemouth is definitely a favourite. We get the ferry across from Whitestrand in Salcombe, which takes just two minutes, and once you are there you can completely relax. The views to Salcombe are beautiful, and on a fine day the beach is bathed in sunshine all day long.
Best for cocktails?
The Island Street Bar and Grill does fantastic cocktails and mocktails – ranging from the traditional ‘tequila sunrise’, to the ‘Salcombe slammer’! Out of season they sometimes do 2-for-1 on them too, as well as 2-for-1 burgers. We keep an eye on their website, and then take friends there to make the most of their deals.
Best for breakfast
It absolutely has to be Valley View Café at Aune Valley in Loddiswell. They’ve recently started doing Sunday morning breakfasts too, and their food is sensational. They use fresh local products, and the flavours are wonderful. If you can’t manage the full Butchers Breakfast, they have lighter options like Granola or Smoked Salmon and Poached Eggs on toast – yum!
