Gotta Have It
Budge up, Big Feast; Introducing the locally made ice lolly that's basically summer on a stick.
When those long, hot and sticky summer days hit (what?! I’m feeling optimistic), you’ll be looking for something for you and the smalls to get your gnashers around and to keep everybody cool. *Taps fingers on chin* Wouldn’t it be great if there were ice lollies out there that weren’t fizzing with sugar? Oh, hi, Ollylolly, aren’t you a tasty surprise!
These rather too-good-looking-to-lick lollies actually are worth tucking in to and the flavours are, literally, mouthwatering. You’ll find them popping up in the freezers of all the cool places across Plymouth and further afield (plus a few select venues in Cornwall too, you hear that Muddy Cornwall? You’re welcome!), from Bantham’s fantastic Gastrobus, to Watergate Bay, Rockets & Rascals and Mitch Tonks’ Rockfish. Oh, and they also happened to supply the backstage restaurant of the Pyramid Stage at this year’s Glasto. Apparently, a Fab doesn’t cut it with Dave Grohl.
The couple behind this fairly new little family-run business based in Plymouth, hit upon the idea after enduring a heatwave with their own brood a couple of years ago. Horrified by the number of nasties found in many of the innocent looking lollies out there, Ollylolly was born in all its retro glory.
The health-conscious out there needn’t fret at all. Shall I throw a few stats at you? I guarantee there’s a fact to make everyone in the family smile. For starters, they’re low cal (between 40 and 120 depending on whether there’s cream involved); there is nothing artificial doing bad things; there’s lots of fresh fruit, herbs and spices involved doing great things; and many of the ingredients are organic. Even the packaging is kind on the planet.
I recently tried the Cold Brew Coffee at a food fair, with a hangover and devoured it, while the Mudlet had great fun with the Mango & Raspberry (hallelujah, fruit made it past her goddam lips!). Next time I’m going for ooh, will it be Pear & Ginger, or Rhubarb & Raspberry?
Oh – and did I mention that Team Ollylolly are also dabbling in Ollytails – a party on a stick for the grown-ups? I can personally vouch for the Pimms concoction, since the lovely Mel rocked up at the recent Muddy Awards bash on her trike, with a little stash for the winners.
Enjoy the summer, Muddies! (and let me know which is your fave flavour, if you snaffle one!) x
