Surf South West, Croyde
Wanna catch a wave? Head to North Devon's award-winning surf school for surfing & SUP lessons, adrenaline-fuelled coasteering and family fun on the water.
Whether you’re happy on a board or a total beginner, you know you’re in safe hands with this award-winning surf school in Croyde. With a solid history going back to 1996, Surf South West is owned by John and business partner Will, SSW’s head instructors for over 18 years. It’s also a Centre of Excellence for Surfing England, the recognised National Governing Body (NGB) for Surfing in England, with up to 20 coaches on hand during the peak summer season.
You can hop on board with a public or private lesson, regardless of whether you’re 8 years old or 80 (or even younger if you go private) with all the kit hire and tuition included in the price.
Starting out? Book in for a two-hour half day surf lesson, available in in convenient packages of 1, 2, 3 or 5 lessons which you can cram into a few days if you’re here on your hols, booking over the children’s school break, or want to spread out sessions over the season.
If it’s adrenaline you’re after, get your thrill coasteering. You don’t need surfing skills and it’s huge fun as you’re guided by experienced instructors to jump into the sea, swim over rocks, through gullies and experience the impact zone.
Fancy a break with your gals? Book in for a ‘Girls on Waves’ weekend, designed for women and girls 10+ and run by women coaches. By the end your stay, you might not be a pro but chances are you’ll be standing up and riding waves to the shore.
Plus, there are options on hen and stag weekends, and a mixed yoga retreat (two 2021 dates in June and September) which sounds like a total defrazzle. Based in a farmhouse in nearby Georgeham, you’ll wake up to a morning yoga session followed by a wholesome organic breakfast, head down for a surf then it’s back for lunch, followed by more yoga in the evening- and repeat. Heavenly.
Being surfers, they’re naturally passionate about sustainability and have a Gold Green Tourism Award to prove it. If you arrive by public transport, you’ll get beneficial rates with 10 % off your booking.
For the last 10 years, SSW have been working with the Wave Project, a charity that provides surf therapy lessons for children with special needs, which means they offer adapted surfing, with adapted kit and beach wheelchairs. So, no-one need ever be left out, regardless of ability – everyone can get onto the beach and into those breakers.
