Selgars Mill, Uffculme
A bucolic events venue in an old flour mill, offering retreats, rustic weddings and more, with a mission to promote social change for the better.
Muddy always gets very excited when we find a new cultural hub in Devon, so hello and pleased to see you Selgars Mill!
Located at Uffculme, conveniently just a few minutes off Junction 27 on the M5, it’s nestled in 8 bucolic acres of gardens, wild woods, fields and bubbling streams and filled with tweeting birds and wildlife. To add to the charm factor, until the 70s it was a working flour mill and you can still see the old wheel on the side of the 18th century building.
Since 2020, it’s been a base for Stir to Action, a forward-thinking Dorset-based workers co-operative who train people, communities and businesses to be more democratic, advising on everything from becoming a co-op to offering ‘Workaways’, where if you’re bored of working from home, and need a boost, you can hire a hot-desk alongside other marvellous, clever people like yourself.
There’s a myriad of hire options for events and rustic weddings (it’s licensed for up to 100 guests), including a rustic barn with a bar and stage, and a gorgeous shepherd’s hut that caught Muddy’s eye, complete with woodburner and a teeny kitchen looking out onto a babbling brook. Quite the romantic getaway. No need for a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign here.
As you’d expect, Selgars Mill is laid out on ethical, vegetarian and planet-friendly principles, from the biomass barn which heats the water, to the zero waste cleaning products in the kitchen, so it’s very sustainable and good for the conscience. It’s early days, but we’ll be watching eagerly to see what events and workshops come out of here, including a host of defrazzling retreats and other cultural events in the offing. Watch this space!
