Want to leave the world behind for a few days ? Come here and let Muddy envelop you in the perfect rural stay – a 15 acre award-winning site near Tiverton, mid-Devon. Happy campers should book in to one of their three luxury yurts (complete with private bathrooms/sleeps 2 adults and 2 kids) open from Easter to end-October. Prefer a roof to canvas? Or coming with a larger group? Then cosy in at one of Orchard Retreat’s two cottages open all year round – ideal for when you want to get away with young and older rellies, or if you’re holidaying with another family. And up to two pooches are welcome too.

Not only is Orchard Retreat easy on the eye, with its meadows, stream and far-reaching views across Devon fields, it’s been brilliantly thought through by owners Vicky and Nick, to create the perfect yurt feng shui – just the three, nicely spaced, and positioned so the eating areas don’t overlook each other. Plus, you get a welcome pack on arrival and with the owners living on site (with their dogs and chickens) they’re around if you need them – along with an honesty shop for local goodies – but not in your face.

Having older kids, Muddy is planning a chilled stay just with the hubby, a few books and hopefully a lot of peace and quiet – with a dip in the open air baths in the Tub House, their rustic open-topped version of a hot tub, where you can bathe under the stars. But were the Mudlets to twist my arm, there’s plenty to please everyone from tots to hard-to-please teens, including table tennis, a badminton court, climbing wall and football goals – as well as being set up with high chairs and cots for the babes.

It’s self-catering, with a cool box and modern kitchenette, or should you and some mates book all three yurts, there are tasty supper clubs on site. But even on your own, with an excellent farm shop right next door, you won’t need to lug your usual supermarket shop with you – and why would with lots of lovely local goodies on hand?

Everything comes Muddy quality-approved, from the top-notch bedding (locally laundered) to the vintage sideboards and chests which give each yurt a bespoke Victorian traveller feel. No wonder they just got a Gold from Visit England. Vicky tells us 50% of her bookings are repeats, always a sure sign of a winner. Need a nudge? This should do it – when you’re not chilling in a hammock, tired mummas can book yoga and a massage in the privacy of your yurt, with scented oils and the crackle of the woodburner. We’re sold.
