Moonhoney Mead

Hey, honey-bun! We’ve found a brand-new tipple you should try, a sparkling craft mead with a modern twist, and it’s ‘handmead’ here in Devon.

Now, here’s something really new and exciting on the drinks scene – South Devon based Moonhoney have launched a range of sparkling craft mead, both online and at taster events this summer.

While some baked banana bread and others binged on TV box-sets during lockdown (who moi?), Sam of Moonhoney was busy researching and developing recipes at home, before moving into a newly equipped meadery (a mead brewery) near Kingsbridge and setting off on a mission to produce a new range of sparkling craft meads with a twist.

Now, you’ve probably heard of mead but *starter for ten* do you know what’s in it?

In its most basic form, it’s an alcoholic bevy made from just two ingredients – honey and water – fermented with yeast.  Apparently Vikings couldn’t get enough of it and for centuries it was what lovebirds traditionally consumed for 30 days after their wedding, a period that became known as yep, you got it, a honeymoon.

There are four fresh flavours to try, all gluten-free, including a sparkling GINGER mead, made with orange blossom and wildflower honeys; the fruity and floral, HOPPED mead – a good one for the beer lovers; the light and sparkling ELDERFLOWER mead – an old classic, all grown up, and the very moreish, crisp and slightly dry, SUMMER FRUITS mead – a combination of honey, water, yeast, berries and currants – basically summer in a bottle.

With an ABV of 4.0%, Sam recommends you quaff it chilled. You can nab yours online in 330ml bottles in packs of 8, plus mixed packs of 8 or 16. And, er, ‘bee’ in the know by keeping an eye on their social media for offers, news and details of local tasting events, including Salcombe Live Festival 1-3 October 2021.

With branding and photography by South Devon based ohjay.co.uk and headcake.co.uk, it’s a great way to support your local businesses. Go give it a try!
