Isabella Day Goldsmith
After a special ring, my precious? Isabella Day is a real old-fashioned goldsmith making contemporary treasure inspired by Nature, myth and folklore.
If you love quality handcrafted jewellery, made from scratch, you’ve come to the right place. Isabella Day is more than a jeweller, she’s an artisan goldsmith of 15 years experience, who makes her own gold alloys and expertly works them into beautiful solid gold jewellery, all in her inimitable textural style which has earned her fans globally.
Unlike a jeweller, who buys in bullion from jewellery maker supply stores, a goldsmith takes fine gold direct from the dealers, mixes it with other metals, such as silver and palladium and melts them together to alloy them to their own special recipes – so you really can’t get more bespoke. She’s also really knowledgable about folklore and myth, which she weaves into her work, add meaning and definitely a hint of magic.
Isabella’s favourite work is creating one-of-a-kind bespoke wedding and engagement rings or remarkable fine jewellery pieces, which tell her clients story, sometimes using their gold with sentimental value to remodel it in a more flattering and personal style. For anyone wanting to avoid a surprise engagement-ring that’s too big or small, she makes a unique charm engraved with the Ango Saxon words ‘Wedda me’, then you can go to her studio for a celebratory glass of champers to discuss what you want for the ring.
Her partner, Ford Hallam is also a master goldsmith of 40 years and the world’s leading expert in Japanese metal-smithing, and together they make films about the craft. She’s an expert in something called Japanese kinko which gives her designs its intricate textures and patterns. You can see it in the detail – hours and hours of work right there.
Isabella has racked up loads of cred in the jewellery world and she’s just found out she’s been selected for the 2022 F: Entrepreneur’s top 100 female entrepreneurs campaign. She’s also collaborated on special projects with Not on the High Street, won the National Association of Jewellers competition to design a charm for Childline and has featured on Radio 4 You & Yours in a special edition about remodelling old jewellery.
And exciting things are a foot for Isabella and Ford in 2022 – they’re opening a shop, The Remarkable Goldsmiths, on Foss Street in Dartmouth. It’s currently planned for March, but don’t worry we’ll be sure to let you know when it’s open.
