Furzeleigh Mill

A tastefully restored 16th century mill, this restaurant with rooms is perfectly placed for exploring Dartmoor, Exeter and Plymouth.

Weekend Escapes

Now here’s a stay which should be better known, and if my Muddy-dar is anything to go by, it soon will be. With owners Tessa and Geoff at the helm since 2018, this 10-bedroom charmer is heading towards hot boutique-hotel territory (and wedding venue) thanks to top-to-bottom refurbishments and a talented new chef.

With Geoff’s background in architecture and Tessa’s peripatetic career which meant regularly staying in hotels for over 15 years, they’re nailing location-driven style, customer service and their food offering from the off.

Furzeleigh Mill is nestled between the vibrant town of Ashburton (one of Muddy’s Best Places to Live 2022) and Buckfast, on the Eastern edge of Dartmoor. If you’re looking for a Devon odyssey, you couldn’t be better placed for the Devon Expressway, which is just a minutes away, giving you day trips to the National Park, the south coast and the bright lights of Exeter and Plymouth within a half an hour’s drive.

With a beautiful sun-soaked terrace for cocktails and dining (the table under the magnolia by the hotel’s shop is the hot ticket), Furzeleigh has a welcoming bar and dining room downstairs, and ten bedrooms arranged over two floors upstairs, each individually named after villages on Dartmoor, including some with four-posters. Tessa has done a great job of playing to each room’s character, with on-trend decor and modern en suites, while retaining the character of beams and exposed stone walls. I promise you’ll have it on your insta in a flash!

With the newly zhuzhed Mill Room for dining, there’s plenty for foodies too. Come for pizza afternoons on the terrace, or a proper afternoon tea made by Sinead their pastry chef, and their popular Sunday lunch. Fans of gastro Devon-sourced menus, get this in your diary – new for summer 2022, an exciting taster menu rammed with local produce, some so closely sourced it’s from the fields over the fence.

Appetite whetted? Go give Furzeleigh a whirl.
