Dartmouth Ice Cream
There's ONLY one place for your ice cream fix in Dartmouth - the harbour town's oldest creamery. Plus, home-made fudge, proper milk shakes and more!
It’s a well-kept secret (though not on Muddy’s watch, obvs), if you’re in Dartmouth for the day, your ice-cream go-to is from The Good Intent on Lower Street, just opposite where you get off the lower ferry from Kingswear.
It’s the home of Dartmouth Ice Cream, not only Dartmouth’s oldest creamery, but the only ice-cream handmade in the harbour town. And just the excuse you need to support local, right there.
So dedicated is their fan base, that a Wiltshire customer took a 60-mile detour en route home from her Cornish break recently, having bought a plug-in car freezer box, especially to stock up with a 4-litre tub of Liqourice Toffee. (We’d have bought two, but then we’re just greedy.)
It is very good ice cream – think dense, creamy, artisan clouds, with over 50 flavours that change regularly to keep the locals happy. All family-run by dairy farmer Andrew and daughter in law, Josie, who ensure plenty of fun for the sweet-toothed, with their homemade fudge and yummy cream teas to take away.
Our hot tip is their signature ice cream, The Devon Cream Tea, created from clotted cream, vanilla ice cream, local strawberry jam and broken pieces of scone. (Calories don’t count in a cone, that’s the rules!)
We’re hearing good things about some newbies you might like to taste test for us, including a fruity little number, Cherry Amaretti and Biscoff, a cinammony caramel delight which is flying out the door.
If you’re after something cool (arf, arf) for your event, they have a gorgeous vintage tricycle for hire and will even create a special bespoke flavour just for you and your lucky guests.
And because *apparently* kids like ice cream too, there is all the theatre of sprinkles, pimped cones, bespoke wafers, and sauces, and Sundaes, named for local landmarks, including the Sugary Cove Unicone, with unicorn sprinkles no less, a guaranteed crowd pleaser. Plus, proper milk shakes made old-school with ice-cream and milk, plus a sorbet and vegan range, with a chocolate vegan cone, if you’re feeling naughty.
They’ve actually got three outlets in the town – on Duke Street and at The Boat Float too, because you can’t have too much ice cream when you’re on your hols, can you?
