Bird Eyewear
In the market for a new pair of frames? Look gorgeous and look after the planet with these sustainable designer specs and sunnies.
Bird is an award-winning Devon brand every climate-warrior needs on their radar, with their on-trend vegan and cruelty-free glasses and sunnies – all made from sustainable materials, including wood, bamboo, and recycled plastic.
Founded four years ago by a clever band of brothers, Ed and Lawrence Bird, the aim was to make a difference by creating contemporary frames using sustainable materials, something which – astonishingly – was lacking in the market at the time. Before they knew it, Bird was putting other eyewear brands in the shade. They nabbed a gong for ‘Frame of the Year’ at the Oscars of the spectacle world, the Opticians Awards. Then in 2020, Bird became the first B-Corp Certified eyewear brand, quite a coup, and even now they are one of only five globally. Not bad for a side hustle which started at Ed’s kitchen table.
Working from their Exeter HQ, Bird now create over 30 styles suitable for women, blokes, and their latest uber-durable range for kids, Birdies. They look like super-bendy plastic, but are made from processed castor oil beans. Who knew that was even possible?
If you fancy a bird’s eye view (see what I did there?) prices start at £29 for Birdies, up to an affordable £129 for adults, available online and from south-west stores, including Sancho’s in Exeter and The Eden Project. To make it easy-peasy, Bird let you try on four pairs at home with their quick-turnaround Home Try On for just £1, which – because they’re lovely – they donate to their partner charity SolarAid, which helps distribute solar light to families in Zambia and Malawi.
