Superflashy Newsflash!

It's your soopah-doopah flashy newsflash! Everything you need to know, on a strictly need-to-know-absolutely-everything basis.

Contrary to what you may have heard, video didn’t kill the radio star and if you fancy giving Jo Whiley and Fearne a run for their money, BBC Radio Devon are holding open auditions on Saturday 28 September at the Guildhall in Exeter for anyone who’s fancies their chances of getting into the media. If you want to get on the airwaves, all you have to do is wow the panel of BBC judges with a story no longer than 60-seconds. Fancy giving it a go? Go you! All the deets are here.

Gorgeous new deli alert! Topsham has a fancy new deli called Mercado, selling a range of Portuguese cured meats, cheeses, sweets and biscuits – courtesy of Sara of Sara’s Petite Cuisine. It also has a bonkers range of raibow-coloured toilet rolls (I bought some of course) in pink, red, green and blue. Sara stocks the loos in her pink-themed cake shop-come-cafe down the road with the pink ones, but apparently so many people asked where she gets them, she’s now selling them too.

Vegans and fans of cruelty-free cosmetics, listen up! Peta-registered Devon natural skincare company Aromatika has added a fourth shop to its indie chain on Teignmouth’s Triangle called Devon Soap Company, selling soaps (obvs), salt scrubs, bath bombs, candles and its best-seller Rose Facial Moisturiser, which flies out due to its de-wrinkling powers (and it smells amaaaazing). It joins the original store on Totnes High Street, known for its gorgeous confetti-filled gift wrap (think Rowan Atkinson in Love Actually), as well as shops in Honiton and Dartmouth. Founder Lisa Hosking, a lifelong veggie who started the business from her kitchen table in 2006, tells me the Teignmouth store is soon to have a treatment room where you can relax for a facial. I love their range Nailberry varnish – not only cruelty free but lets your manicured tips breathe. No more flaky, breaky nails – hurrah.

Having snaffled best Newcomer in the Devon Muddy awards earlier this year, Alan and Lisa at The Crafty Beer Shop in Barnstaple, have a new string to their bow – all hail the Little Crafty Bar! Open 6 days a week the same as the shop (closed on Sunday) it may be small, but it packs a big punch when it comes to craft beer, stouts, spirits and – yay! – posh gin. They’ve also introduced Meet The Brewer events (Dan from Exeter’s award-winning mico-brewery Powderkeg is there this Wednesday) as well as Gin Tasting nights. Fancy 10% off? Hotfoot it to their website and sign up to our newsletter.

Damn and double drat! Those wicked peeps at Busby & Fox have just made it even harder to stay in credit by launching their fabulous chunky knits, Bellota Cuffs, sparkly heels and jewellery online. With branches in Totnes, Kingsbridge, Salcombe and my local at Exeter, I never, ever manage to walk across Cathedral Green without their dastardly invisible woman-magnet (I’m gonna find it one day) pulling me in through the door. I’m quite good at knowing what I like when it comes to threads – but stylish Marilyn and manager Freddie always manage to give whatever I try on a tweak with a scarf or suggestion that makes it a million times better (and harder to resist). Maybe online is the safer bet after all. Anyway, you can’t say I didn’t warn you.

Cosy Club is getting set to open a new pair of doors in The Barcode at Drake Circus in Plymouth on Tuesday 22 October. If you’ve not yet quaffed a cocktail at The Cosy Club in Exeter’s Southernhay (where’ve you been??) now’s your chance to try a Teatime Tipple: buy any two cocktails for just £9.95 between 4pm-8pm from Sunday to Thursday, or on a Marvellous Monday when you get a free drink with any main meal from 5pm.

This is Cornwall news really but just thought you’d want to know… there’s a brand-new Pig Hotel coming to Harlyn Bay. Yes!! Your nearest Pig is at Combe, Honiton which opened back in 2016 – all laid-back luxe, amazing scoff and quaff, and a posh but unpretentious vibe and now we’ll have another one nearby. Muddy has spent many a happy day body-boarding with the Mudlets at Harlyn Bay with its golden sands and rock pools. So, it’s a getaway marriage made in heaven – right there. Due to open in June 2020 in Grade II-listed Harlyn House near Padstow, the new Piggy-pad is close to Harlyn beach, Constantine Bay and Trevose Golf Club, and is just a 10-minute drive to Padstow, aka Padstein, home of Rick Stein’s fabulous fishy eateries.

Coloured loo paper. Intriguing! Any idea what dyed it? Just a little concerned about chemicals going into the water system.

Don’t worry – I’m reliably informed by the lovely guy in the shop that it’s dyed with food colouring.
