Music maestro! What’s on for kids at Dartington
Got a budding musician in the family? Then you'll be wanting the lowdown on all the FREE events and workshops at this year's Summer School. Tootoot!
Since 1953, summers at Dartington have meant one thing; the estate is filled with music for four weeks during their Summer School and Festival.
After a forced haitus last year, they’ve just announced they’re back on song this summer, offering a range of workshops, concerts and events where musicians come from all over the world to learn from the industry’s best professionals.
Even better, new for this year is a programme of FREE family friendly and event, with oh-so relaxed concerts where it won’t matter if the ankle-biters want to run around and give their musical, er, talents, free reign.
Highlights include Lux Musicae London, a family-friendly intro to Renaissance and Baroque music; Florian Mitrea, one of their most popular pianists, who will be playing music by Mozart, including his charming variation on Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star on Sunday 8 August at 5pm.
Roald Dahl fans aged 5-11 should save the date for Revolting Rhymes & Marvellous Music (above) on Thursday 19 August at 11.30am – a musical exploration of the Matilda author’s darkly clever tales.
Fancy a family workshop? On Thursday 29 July at 3pm there’s a sing-along for the whole family (children aged 8+), or for younger ones Tots Tunes on Friday 30 July at 10am – where kids aged 5 and under can sing, dance, shake and wobble in an interactive parents and baby class led by cellist Tara Franks. Brass band players aged 8+ can join a fun, open session called Come and Blow on Thursday 19 August at 6pm.
Muddy loves the sound of Soundscreative Lab with Tara Franks, from Monday 2 to Wednesday 4 August. Tara will be waving her baton to musicians of all ages and covering percussion, improvisation and composition in a fun and creative way, with all abilities welcome.
Got a songbird in the family? The children’s choir runs from Wednesday 11 – Friday 14 August from 4-5.30pm, offering a unique opportunity for kids age 8 to 14 to join a choir led by Isabelle Adams, which will culminate in a performance of brand new commission, JOY! on the Friday.
Also new for this year are Free Festival Fridays – every Friday while the Summer School is on, there is a full day of live music where the whole family is welcome. Expect a variety of musical happenings including processions, singing under trees, brass fanfares, folk sessions and much more. The full Festival Friday programme will be posted on the Dartington website the day before – or people can just turn up and be surprised – and – woohoo – it’s completely free.
