Boing! Meet the Easter bunny & other kids fun

We're choc-full of ideas for things to do locally this Easter, from giant egg hunts to meets with lambs and bunnies, plus cocoa-free zones for all ages.


EASTER GROTTO: The Milky Way, Sat 9 – Fri 22 April

Meet the Easter Bunny in his HQ home at The Milky Way

Get out of the grotto, Santa! We’re here for the Easter Bunny now – fresh from his chocolate-laden warren and sitting on a carrot throne (what else?) at The Milky Way. Perfect for 1 – 10 year olds, here they can also meet the ‘Eggsperts’ who apparently control the production of the entire world’s chocolate eggs, solve puzzles, make music and of course, get their choccy egg.

GIANT EASTER EGG HUNT: RHS Rosemoor, Great Torrington, Sat 9 to Sun 24 April

The RHS Rosemoor gardens at Great Torrington have super-sized their Easter offering with a giant painted egg trail (no specs needed to find these whoppers!) along with an Explorer Pack, puzzles to solve and an Easter Bunny on hand. Inevitably, chocolate is involved, however, these little treats are from PLAYin CHOC – organic, vegan, free from main allergens and ethically made in the UK. Nice.

EGGO-SAURUS DINO HUNT, Crealy Theme Park & Resort, Sat 9 – Sun 24 April

Raaaaaah! Step back in time to Exeter’s theme park for an Eggo-Saurus Dino Hunt, an Indiana Jones-style quest to find hidden hidden dinosaur eggs. Kids will haver to have their wits about them as they’ll be given co-ordinates and a ‘prehistoric’ map to discover where they’ve been laid. Plus, there’s the Alice’s Wonderland Show live in the Crealy Arena featuring comedy acrobatics, dance and aerial arts in this spectacular show. (11 – 24 April).

EASTER EGG HUNT & BIG DUCK HUNT: The Big Sheep, Bideford, Sat 9 – Sun 24 April

Seamlessly blending cute sheep and farmyard fun with rollercoaster rides, The Big Sheep are hosting their usual Easter Egg Hunt, with the addition of a BIG Duck hunt for littlies aged 2 -6 years old and the chance to win their own erudite height in Usborne books, included FREE when you book online for Easter Preschool week (4 – 8 April) and over the Easter hols. Plus, the Easter bunny is loitering of course, literally 1000’s of Malteser Easter eggs piled high to the rafters for the winning.

NATIONAL TRUST: Various around the county inc. Killerton, Knightshayes, Coleton Fishacre, Castle Drogo, Sat 9 – Sun 24 April

The National Trust are sticking with an outdoorsy theme by providing a Nature-inspired activity pack, whereby kids can learn about what’s flowering this spring and do things like building a bird’s nest – with get a Rainforest Alliance chocolate egg as their reward.

SHIRE HORSE CARRIAGE RIDE EGG HUNT, Devon Shire Carriages, Dartmoor, 7, 8, 11, 13 April

Be hot to trot with Devon Shire Carriages and their handsome shire horses where you can sit back and be lazily ferried around beautiful Dartmoor while kids read the riddles and collect handmade local choc en route. A clever way to include older rellies in the kids’ egg hunt antics, maybe? £135 for up to six people, ride lasts an hour.

EASTER EGG TRAIL: Babbacombe Model Village, Babbacombe, nr Torquay, Sat 2 – Sun 24 April

Dinky houses, dinky eggs, dinky entertainment – head to Babbacombe Model Village for an egg hunt amongst the teeny model houses. Everyone gets a chocolatey treat and you can, er, putt your golfing skills to the test on their new 9-hole crazy golf course.

FIND THE EASTER CHICKS: Clovelly, North Devon, Mon 4th – Mon 18 April

Say hi to Clovelly’s resident donkeys at the top of the High Street while you’re there

Kids are given a map of the historic fishing village and dispatched to spot the faux chicks hidden up and down the High Street to the Quay; the more you spot, the more chocolate you – I mean they – get to scoff. (Family ticket £22.90)

BREAKFAST WITH THE EASTER BUNNY: The Bucket & Spade, Shaldon, Sat 16 and Sun 17 April, 9.30am – 11.00am

Nothing planned for Easter weekend? Hop over to the award-winning Bucket & Spade Café in Shaldon for brekkie with, guess who? Yes, the Easter bunny! He’s everywhere this year… (£10 per adult and £8.50 per child). Or book a bunny-free Easter lunch – two courses for £20 and three courses for £25 per person. Booking advised.

EASTER NATURE TRAIL: The Donkey Sanctuary, Sidmouth, until Sun 24 April

Encourage their green fingers with this Easter egg trail, which as well as the free choccy egg on completion comes with a biodegradable bag of seeds to help them create a wildflower meadow. No booking required, £5 per trail.

EASTER EGG-GLOW! Kents Cavern, Torquay, Sat 9 – Sun 24 April

MUSIC: Welsh National Opera, Theatre Royal Plymouth, Sun 10 April

Hers’s a great way to introduce kids to classical music in an unstuffy way: the WNO are bringing Play Opera Live to the county, with live music from West Side StoryThe Wizard of Oz, Star Trek, The Avengers, Rossini’s William Tell and Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. Expect a family-friendly vibe with fun facts, singalongs and interactive activities in the foyer before the main event.

LIVE WRESTLING: LDN Wrestling, Landmark Theatre, Ilfracombe, Weds 13 April

Remember Big Daddy? This is the first wrestling show to hit Ilfracombe in 30 years, when BD was last seen battling Giant Haystack. Featuring some of the country’s top grapplers, including LDN British Champion Alan Lee Travis and American heavyweight Steve Gibki, and the high flying Young Lion from Belfast – high-impact action is guaranteed.

ROCK CLIMBING: Crag 2 Mountain, Princetown, Dartmoor

Not just rock climbing, but also caving, abseiling, navigational skills…the qualified instructors of Crag 2 Mountain sure know how to make the most of their craggy Dartmoor location. Suitable for family groups, primary school age and up, you can drive them up the wall for a change – with a three-hour Rock Adventure Session for young ‘uns, and a Rock Climbing Taster Session for 11-up. I’M A HIGH FIVE CAMPER, GET ME OUT OF HERE!: Mount Kelly Prep School, Tavistock, Mon 11 – Thurs 14/Tues 19 – Fri 22 April

Looking to pack them off for a few days? Mount Kelly Prep are running two three-day child friendly bush-tucker challenges, including den building, bushcraft, Nerf Gun wars, zorbing and circus skills. Plus, if the weather turns, they won’t get soaked – Mount Kelly are equipped with an indoor sports hall,  trampolining and squash court facilities. From £33 per day.

LAMBING SUNDAY: Martinsfield Farm, Exeter, Sun 24 April

The chance to cuddle and maybe even feed the orphan lambs and meet the lovely Kune Kune pigs. You’ll have the choice between tea and cake or burger and cider and there’s an Easter egg quiz for the kids – Sure to be a baaaaaaa-rn storming event.

TRAIN RIDE: Thomas & Friends, South Devon Railway, Buckfastleigh, Fri 15 – Mon 18 April

Bust my buffers! Thomas and his Tank Engine pals are tootling into South Devon, so avid Thomas fans can take a ride between Buckfastleigh and Totnes Riverside stations, meet Sir Topham Hatt and join Sodor Station Sweepers Rusty & Dusty. Family tickets £70, adults £22/kids £17pp.

FOREST FUN: Go Ape, Haldon Forest, Kennford, throughout Easter

Adrenalin-seekers, step this way for two treetop challenges with zip wires and treetop walks. Older kids can try the Treetop Challenge (min age 10 years) which lasts 2-3 hours and culminates in a hair-raising 200m slide over the Scot’s pines, or for under 10s (over 1m tall) it’s the one-hour Treetop Adventure where you can walk through the tree canopy and take a free-fall on the Tarzan Swing. Or head out into the forest on a heavy duty all-terrain Go Ape Segway. From £19pp.

THEATRE: Joseph & the Technicolor Dreamcoat, Theatre Royal Plymouth, 26 – 30 April

Can’t get to London? No problemo – for one week only the brand-new production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat hits Plymouth, starring Alexandra Burke and Jac Yarrow.

DANCE: Offbeat Dance and Fitness, Palace Theatre Paignton, Sat 2 and Sat 23 April

Hot from the Big Smoke, Offbeat Dance & Fitness are running fun dance classes for older teens and adults, teaching the steps to popular West End show tunes.

Got a gamer in the family? Book them in for a taste of content creator life in Tubers’ professional studios. Over the course of three days, kids will get an intro into the basic skills of using DSLR cameras, producing gaming content and editing their videos in Final Cut Pro X. Suitable for 9-14 year olds, £95pp.
