Where’s the best place to live in Devon?

The Sunday Times has revealed its top spots to live in 2020 - but did your hometown make the cut?

It looks like we’ll all be spending plenty of time at home at the moment, so what better time to appreciate where you’re living (or, alternatively, start dreamily house-hunting on Rightmove)? The Sunday Times has just released its annual round-up of the best spots in the country to lay your hat – its Best Places to Live Guide 2020, takes into account house prices, air quality, good schools and access to green spaces, as well as community spirit – we can all use a spade load of that right now!

Altrincham in Greater Manchester took national top spot (pah!) and Cheltenham in Gloucestershire was the South West regional winner but two of our local towns – Chagford on Dartmoor and Shaldon on the South Devon coast – made it onto the the Best of the South West list. Bravo!

The seaside village of Shaldon won major points for its busy community schedule, including the summer regatta, as well as the village green with its covetable Georgian houses and primary school rated outstanding by Ofsted.

A few regular Muddy hang-outs got a shout-out, including Tim Bouget’s award-winning eatery, Ode Cafe (pictured) for its sustainable ethos and local grub, with honourable mentions also for The Ferry Boat Inn – good for live music and its pub garden right on the beach – and The Ness, a family-friendly hotel serving classic pub-grub with awesome views over the Teign estuary. Don’t miss the summer ferry from Shaldon beach to Teignmouth if you want to catch the evening sun and fabulous sunsets from the back beach.

Chagford on Dartmoor is the other commendation, home to the Muddy-award winning Best Boutique Stay 2019, The Three Crowns, along with Proper Job, a recycling charity that has kept growing since it was founded more than 25 years ago by a muddy-booted band of allotment-holders. This historic village also plays host to the annual music fest Chagstock, which all being well will return on 24-25 July with Scouting for Girls among the line-up. The lovely deli – where you can buy locally made kimchi – wine shop and pretty square (with its octagonal Market House nicknamed The Pepperpot by the locals) also get a mention, along with its eco-friendly, arty vibe.
