House swap: Devon homes for £1 million
This week we've got our noses firmly pressed up against the windows of estate agents in heavenly Devon, and a fantasy £1,000,000 in the Muddy kitty, but what will it buy?
Welcome to my Grade II listed converted 4-bed Georgian mansion. Yup, the one at the end of the tree-lined drive, behind the secure gate. I’ll meet you at the bottom of my elegant sweeping staircase, then we can have a coffee next to the Aga, pop into the sauna and after a wander around the 13 acres, we can catch a film in the cinema room. *in my dreams*
Mapstone Hill, Lustleigh
Be still my beating heart! Muddy loves this quirky 5-bed Manor House which dates back to the 14th century and has a beautifully-preserved Solar Room (that’s a beamed living area found in Medieval English houses). It comes with two-bed cottage so if you’re thinking of making the leap, this could be your readymade Dartmoor holiday business, right here.
Hankering after a period cottage by the sea? Er, obvs! Just two miles upstream from Dartmouth, Orchard House capaciously spreads itself over three floors. Outdoors you have a large wildflower garden and an orchard where – when you’re not out on the boat, dahling – you can sip your gin and drink in those stunning views of the River Dart. Let me know when you’ve got the guest room ready?
How does Rosemount House grab you? 6 beds, 1 acre of grounds and more period features than you can shake a chimney stick at, including stone mullion windows, oak-panelled walls, parquet flooring, super Minster fireplaces, high ceilings and a grand staircase. Ooh yes, and a gym/office and a playroom with a vaulted ceiling which was once the former Chapel to the house. Amen to that.
Love the indoor-outdoor lifestyle? Perched in a leafy lane in lovely Kingswear – the quiet sister town to Dartmouth opposite – Outer Reach has 5 beds, and comes with a huuuuge wraparound balcony for marvelling at those boaty views.
The eagle-eyed among you may have spotted The Old Nursery comes with a swimming pool *jokes* and that’s not all. This single-storey property has a gorgeously kitted-out interior, and has a self-contained 2-bed annexe with its own kitchen-dining room and sitting room. Plus, one of Muddy’s favourite pubs, The Lamb Inn, is just down the road at Sandford. Sorted.
It’s uber-modern, just three miles from the North Devon surfer coast and it’s all mine! Okay, that last bit’s not true but it could be yours if you’re desperately seeking a 4-bed high-spec home with open-plan indoor-outdoorsy space that screams Parteeee. That self-contained two storey wing would come in very handy for guests too. Just saying.
Washington House, Torquay
This pretty 5-bed Victorian villa on the leafy outskirts of Torquay is the stuff of Miss Marple’s dreams, all high ceilings, arched stained-glass windows and character features. Just picture it: pouring yourself a cocktail and stepping from a light-filled kitchen-breakfast room onto the terrace for a snifter to soak in the sea views. Heavenly – and Watcombe Beach is two minutes down the road and you’ve got two brilliant boys and girls grammar schools in the town. Don’t know about you but I’m sold.
Seaton Beach, Seaton
Calling all eco-conscious beach babes! Chill on the wraparound balcony of your 3-bed coastal penthouse while your electric car charges and the Solar Photovoltaic panels do the work. This high-tech new-build on Seaton beach is Passivhaus Plus-certified, in a building that produces more energy than it uses. High-spec and low-running costs: we likey.
Okay it’s a teeny bit over budget (£1,250,000) but c’mon, just look at it! Imagine the crunch of the gravel as you sweep up the drive, little Rupert and Jemima running into the galleried hallway up to one of the 7 bedrooms (they could have two each!) while you head into the massive kitchen with its wooden-beamed garden room. With three huge reception rooms, a playroom, a big garden, it’s so family-friendly it’s got happy-ever-after written all over it.
And finally, one we just couldn’t resist just over the border in Helston, Cornwall
Picture-perfect farmhouse? Tick. Sea view? Tick. Toe-dipping distance to the sea? Tickety-tick! This tranquil 3/4-bed former farmstead near Porthleven is near to Marazion and St Michaels Mount, and has a large two storey traditional stone barn plus ¾ of an acre gardens on the side. If you’re trying to find a house in Cornwall, give lovely Jayne at Live Beside the Sea a call, she’s a pro at finding special homes for busy people.
