Burn, Baby Burn

Nothing says romance more than the seductive flicker of a candle. Here's our pick of the best ones made right here in Devon.

Seriously, who doesn’t love a wodge of fragrant wax flickering away on the coffee table? In the winter months, especially, it just brings a little bit of cheer to your hibernation den, doesn’t it? While we’re still in the darkest months, we’ve been sniffing out a few local brands that are currently making Muddy Devon HQ smell gorgeous.  Here’s our top 3, all a fraction of the price of the bigger high street brands, too – and inhale……

Beach House Botanics, Bergamot, Lemongrass & Lime, from £6

My favourite-looking one of the bunch, I love the amber glass jars and minimalist packaging of these candles from Beach House Botanics.  Hand poured in small batches from a workshop on the East Devon coast, the soy wax is mixed with a blend of ‘therapeutic grade’ essential oils and this one gives a rather gorgeously zingy hit, as soon as the lid is off. It’s a winning combo for this time of year, since the bergamot is mood balancing, the lemongrass relieves stress and the lime helps relieve exhaustion.  So basically, it’s happiness in a jar.

And, priced from £3 for a set of tea lights, up to £16 for a candle tin, the price is a mood-booster, too.

Five Cedars, Riviera Breeze, £15

Candle rose gold lid

When I first met Charlotte at Five Cedars Health & Beauty in Tiverton, she told me she was on a bit of a mission to fulfil a dream of making her own range of candles. Six months on, et voila! This candle, one of a small range of 3 different scents, is simply packaged to reflect the clean Five Cedars brand; but there’s an option to add either a silver or rose gold lid to add a touch of bling at home. Although a delicate scent, it’s the most highly fragranced of the three, and with sea kelp in the ingredients, it was designed to evoke that lovely waft of sea salt and spray (y’know, the kind that’s probably hit you in the face during a walk in one of these winter storms?!).  Still, it’s really rather nice in the comfort of your own home.  I’ll be saving this one for the summer, I think.

This one’s a biggie too, and at £15 it’s a total bargain.

Buff Natural Body Care, Mama, from £12.95

Made by a trained aromatherapist from soya wax and coconut oil, this aromatherapy burner is pretty special, not least because it’s a ‘natal’ blend, that promises to nurture mama’s and mama’s to-be (*cough* did someone say Mother’s Day isn’t far away?).  The essential oils of lavender, frankincense and mandarin do the business in the room and the little glow in the amber glass jar looks pretty damn good when you’re having a nice long soak in the bath.

buff candle lit and box

This one’s my favourite scent of the three and you can boost it with an all-over body experience, too, since there’s also a body scrub, bath soak and oils in the range. And, exhale….
