Pearls: the white hot jewellery trend
Dispel all thoughts of granny's twinset: high fash fans are pegging pearls as 2021's chicest accessory. Here's how to nail the trend.
Pearls are having a moment, but you can hold the twinset… I’m channelling Kamala, Daphne, Emily… anyone but my granny, frankly.
They were all over the inauguration – J Lo was dripping in pearls while Kamala Harris barely leaves the house without hers. Then there’s the Emily in Paris effect – pearls on earrings, chokers and that giant pearl handbag. They’re a statement that says I can dabble with old lady fashion and effortlessly come out on the right side of 40.
The rather glorious news is that they don’t cost the earth – in many cases the real things match the replicas on price. So I’m putting away that string of plastic pearls that last saw light atop a polyester bridesmaid dress circa 1990… this time I’ll be wearing the real deal. And it’s the beauties on The Real Pearl Co that are tickling my sartorial fancy.
The Henley-based company knows its stuff, creating jewellery for museums and stately homes inspired by the style queens of history, from Cleopatra to Coco Chanel, and cleverly responding to royal and celebrity trends. Kate Middleton’s pearl earrings always sell out, while Downton drove sales of long strings of pearls and tassel necklaces. Multistring pearl chokers are de rigeur on the site since Bridgerton, and now Kamala has us reconsidering the single string. Next up, brooches – yes really, since Chanel clustered them on the catwalk, so now brooches are a girl’s best friend.
Fancy adorning yourself too? Here are our favourite picks from the collection, all at price points that don’t require a right royal income.
1 White Baroque pearl necklace
The Crown had me drooling over Diana’s wardrobe – cinched-in waists, puff sleeves and acid brights. Now I fancy this simple statement piece. Worn over a statement knit I reckon it’ll quietly dazzle in just the right way.
2 White pearl and lapis lazuli necklace
I love the contrast of the pearls against the lapis lazuli (try saying that after a few negronis). I’m picturing this doubled up and worn under an open neck crisp white shirt. Hey, we can all dream.
3 Four-strand coral and white pearl necklace
If it’s Regency-core that tickles your feather headband, and a corset is a step too far, make your Bridgerton statement with a multi-strand short necklace. With its alternating white pearls and pink and red coral, it’s the closest I might get to the Mediterranean this summer (*sob*). But at least I’d have this joyous number to cheer me up.
4 White pearl bracelets with brass and semi-precious stone beads
These would look so fabulous on a tanned arm, clustered with a couple of slender gold bands, glinting in the candlelight of a the Venetian restaurant I hope to be sitting in come August. That failing, it will also really jazz up a plain knit for that monthly Zoom sales meeting – the more likely scenario unfortunately!
5 Extra large white Baroque pearl earrings
It’s that painting, and that earring, and for this price, you’ll even get two. I’ve gotta have a pair. In the pearl world, ‘Baroque’ refers to a pearl with an uneven shape and surface – no two are ever the same, which will make me the only girl with that pearl earring.
6 Bespoke dog necklace
That elegant long neck, those high cheekbones and piercing big brown eyes… Henry the Italian greyhound has really caught my eye with this agate and gold plated choker, available in a range of semi-precious stones. While I’m not sure I could carry it off with his nonchalant grace, it’s got me considering the lockdown puppy situ just so I can justify the made-to-order dog necklace.
