House of Brine, Exeter Quay
Lucky Exeterites can choose from two urban offerings from the new eatery on the Quay: tapas-style small plates or a luxe brunch. Mouth watering options include bao with slow roast pork belly, dirty fries with buttermilk fried chicken and roasted fava beans with chilli and lime. Vegan/veggie also available. True romantics have the option of adding an exquisite dried flower bouquet by Darling Buds for £15 to your basket. Collection or delivery to EX1, EX2, EX3 or EX4 postcode and a bottle of Prosecco or Rose Spumante for £20.
The Rodean, Kenton near Exeter
Looking for a menu that shouts local? This three-course affair from Kenton’s family run restaurant has owners Matt and Lizzie, serving up a choice of local Creedy carver duck, wild sea bass or a veggie wellington made from Forest Funghi mushrooms grown just down the road at Dawlish. £60 for two (add their house fizz for £15), free delivery (at set times) to Exminster, Starcross and Kenton or collection.
More sweets for your sweetie? Jamie and the Twenty-Seven team are rustling up a 5-course gourmet extravaganza, including Salcombe lobster and Borough Farm beef, and not one, but TWO dessert courses. Available from Friday 12 to Sunday 14. £120 for two.
The Elephant, Torquay
Fancy a date night for two that feels like you’re at a posh restaurant? Get your glad rags on (with slippers, obvs) on Saturday 13 Feb and settle in for Michelin star meal from The Elephant. The epitome of a posh takeaway, for Valentine’s Day they’re throwing everything but a diamond ring at it with five or six courses including oak smoked salmon, Brixham scallops, ballotine of cornfed chicken followed by dark chocolate fondant and Passionfruit Pâte de Fruits. Add a Sharpham Cremet to share for £12 if you think your belly can take it. £100 for two, by collection only.
Roasted by Jack and Scott, Nationwide
Valentine’s Day is on a Sunday this year, so if you have a hankering for a roast dinner try one from Michelin-trained chefs Jack Blumenthal (yes, Heston’s son – can you see the resemblance?) and Scott Perkins. They do 90% of the cooking, all you have to do is reheat (read the Muddy review here). Alternatively the duo have a special Valentine’s Day menu on offer with a whopping five courses of ravioli, Heston inspired roasted scallops, steak and dauphinoise, chocolate bomb pudding and petit fours. No doubt it will be delicious – the apple doesn’t fall far from the Blumenthal tree! Roasts £28.50, Valentine’s menu £120 for two. Nationwide delivery.
Bistrot Pierre, Royal William Yard, Plymouth
Fancy a four-course Francais delight with a choice of either boeuf bourguignon or veggie tagine de legumes, rounded off with a squidgy chocolate brownie and tarte citron. Mai, oui! £50 for 2, by collection.
Salutation Inn, Topsham
The Salutation have been doing great work in lockdown supporting local fishermen with their Tuesday-Saturday wet fish shop so it makes sense their Valentine’s Day cook-at-home kit focuses on seafood (a real catch if your beloved goes weak at the knees for oysters). Includes Lyme Bay hand dived scallops, Teignmouth smoked mussels and lobster thermidor on the main menu and for dessert, madam, rhubarb, pistachio and white chocolate gateaux. Winslade Manor, Clyst St Mary, Exeter
After 28 years at the amazing Jack in the Green, award-winning chef Matt Mason has taken the helm of the new Winslade Manor Restaurant and Bar, currently operating as a pop-up takeaway. For lovebirds, he’s created a tempting Finish at Home Menu, with five-courses of local goodies including smoked Chalkstream trout, Quicke’s cheese, Creedy Carver, West Country beef, with instructions and a link to a live video suite if you need more instructions. Yes, chef! Feb 13 is sold out, so you’d better be quick if you want nosh for Feb 14. £90 for two, collection or local delivery within 5 miles.
Dirty Bones, Nationwide
Hot and saucy! Dirty Bones has collaborated with Sauce Shop and Ketel One Vodka to create a smokin’ hot, limited edition brunch kit for V Day to rustle up at home. The DIY box includes short rib crumpets, skinny fries, Sauce Shop’s Habenero sauce and award-winning ketchup, plus a Ketel One Dirty Mary with Dirty Bones’ signature Pringle rim (yes, really). £37 for two. Nationwide delivery.
Menu by Lou, Croyde
Muddy loves a lockdown start-up so we’re bigging up Lou who intends to spice up your night with her four-course Mexican taco kits, handmade in her Croyde kitchen to warm up at home. Start with hand-cut tortilla chips, with three dips and salsa, tuck into cheesy creamed corn and a burnt spring onion crema followed by either pork or jackfruit tacos. Lou will also send you two menu cards, along with table laying advice and a Spotify playlist for added ambience. Chachacha! Veggie and vegan options available. £50 for two, nationwide.
Valentines at Home, The Five Bells, Clyst Hydon
As usual, chef Charlotte at Muddy-approved The Five Bells, has come up trumps for all appetites with this three-course menu which includes vegan and gluten-free across starters, mains and dessert menus. Mains options include fillet steak au poivre, papillote of baked hake and smoked beetroot Wellington. Three options for dessert too, though my money is on the passionfruit cheesecake.
The Royal George, Appledore
This fabulous family-run and award-winning pub with rooms is all about sourcing the best quality locally so snap up their 3-course Valentine’s Gourmet Food Boxes, including fresh fish, Veggie/ Vegan or meat options. Sure to be special. From £40, for collection on Sat 13 Feb.
The Ring of Bells, Cheriton Fitzpaine, Crediton
Loved by Crediton locals for their Sunday Roasts on Wheels, (rare roast beef and Yorkshires & pork belly, since you ask) Binka and the team have a Valentine’s three course menu with which to do your wooing, starting with Fowey mussel & crab ragout, salt baked beef sirloin, croissant croquet pudding, trompettes, parsnip & buttermilk sauce followed by chocolate and peanut butter fondant and homemade truffles. £60 for two, ollection or delivery within 6 miles.
Larks Live, Valentine’s Chocolate Making Class, Sat 13 Feb, 2pm
Planning to pop into Tesco’s for that last-minute box of Quality Street? Push the boat out instead this year and wow your other half with a box of Valentine’s chocolates you’ve made yourself. Join chef Mikael Perret of Le Frog for an afternoon online class to learn, including how to temper chocolate, along with moulding, filling, colouring and casting. £25 per screen plus ingredients.
