8 ideas to supersize your Mother’s Day

More is more this Mother's Day! Supersize your mum on her special day with lunch or an afternoon tea and an extra treat on the side.

Want to make mum feel extra-special this year? Or looking to drop a supersized hint to the kiddos? Here’s my pick of the best teas and treats, with spa treatments, live music, fizz and gin on the side, for the full-on Mother’s Day works.

Mum’s The Word Spa Day, Salcombe Harbour Hotel, until 31 March

Two relaxing treatments in Salcombe’s most prestigious hotel with a glass of fizz, afternoon tea and use of all the spa facilities, including saunas, hydropotherapy pool and the most relaxing loungers EVER. Mum can take her pick from an ESPA facial, massage, mani or pedicure or a soothing leg or foot pamper. £85 weekdays/£105 weekends.

Mother’s Day Gin Tasting With Salcombe Gin, Powderham Castle, Kenton, Sun 22 Mar

Woman does not live on tea alone, and if your mum is more a gin than tea girl, how about this? Powderham Castle, a family-owned 14th century pile in a beautiful deer park, have ditched the Earl Grey and substituted a boozy 90-minute session with a Salcombe Gin ‘Rosé Sainte Marie’ cocktail & canapés on arrival. Drinkies kick off at 2.30pm, so there is time for lunch or a walk around the stunning grounds beforehand. £30 per person, booking essential. Chin chin!

Sunday Indulgence, Ilsington Country House Hotel, nr Newton Abbot

Who doesn’t love a bit of Sunday indulgence? This award-winning spa on the edge of Dartmoor always comes up with the goods with its city-worthy quality and Tibetan vibe. For a very reasonable £75 mum gets full use of all the facilities within the Spa for either the morning or afternoon, a complimentary robe and towel, a 25-minute treatment (back, neck and shoulder massage, facial or scalp massage) and a 2-course Sunday lunch served in the on-site bistro, Blue Tiger Inn or if the sun shines, out on the terrace. Mother’s Day sorted.

Sunday lunch at The White Hart, Dartington Hall, Totnes

With a talented ex-Fifteen chef, a local farm-to-fork menu, a family-friendly vibe (and 20% off during March), The White Hart is a fab place to take the mumma. Historic and set in leafy grounds, it’s perfect for a post-scoff stroll, with the Shops at Dartington just 15 minutes walk away where you’ll find top-notch Devon crafts and Dartington glassware and a small playground for the kiddies. Then, head on back to the Barn Cinema for evening where Military Wives is showing. It’s the uplifting story of how two women (played by the wonderful Sharon Horgan and Kristin Scott-Thomas), turn the loneliness of living on a military base in Afghanistan into a chart-topping success. Just the ticket.

Source Sunday, Saunton Sands Hotel, Braunton

What says “I love you mum” more than a spa day with lunch? Yep, an overnight spa stay at the glorious Saunton Sands Hotel on the North Devon coast. Perched above three miles of golden beach, with dunes and blowy seaside walks at her disposal, this spa sleepover will treat mum to an hour and a half in award-winning thermal suite, a 30-minute spa treatment and three-course dinner with full English or Continental breakfast in the morning. It costs £160 per person, or double it for some quality time with ma for the two of you.

Spring Getaway with Piggy pressies, The Pig at Combe, Honiton, until 31 March

Muddy loves The Pig at Combe so I guarantee if you’ve not taken mum here yet, you need to get with the piggy programme. They’ve got a spring offer on which runs till the end of the month – so you’d better grab it quick – of an overnight stay, with breakfast for 2. The extras come in the shape of lovely piggy gifts, including a copy of THE PIG Book, an exclusive PIG candle created in partnership with Bramley and a bottle of PIG Hut Wine for mum to take home. A very special Mother’s Day nailed for £190 per person.

Mother’s Day Spa Offer, Aztec Spa, Torquay, Sun 22 Mar – Sun 5 April

Toot toot! Mum a fan of the old Mayan panpipes? Treat her to a Spa Afternoon in the rainforest-themed subterranean Aztec spa complete with Afternoon Tea and Bistro and two treatments. She could unwind with a Swedish Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage, detox with a Body Wrap, primp her visog with an Express Facial or treat her tootsies to an OPI Express Pedi or Mani. There’s also a huge 25m pool, sauna, jacuzzi and steam room at her disposal. All for £49 per person. Fancy it? Call 01803 400190 to book.

Mother’s Day Lunch by the beach, Burgh Island, Bigbury, Sun 22 Mar

The glitz of a bygone era, a sea tractor to take you there and, when the tide comes in, the feeling of being totally cut off from land  in glorious Art Deco isolation. Book mum in for a three-course lunch in Burgh Island’s Grand Ballroom on Mother’s Day, with a choice of local Brixham crab, Elmhirst cheeses, steak and wild mushrooms on the menu – all accompanied by the gentle tinkling of the fountain and the talented plinking of the pianist. Then, its out onto the golden sands at Bigbury beach beneath, or stay on the island and head down to the natural seawater bathing spot, the Mermaid Pool, for a pootle around in the rowing boat (or if she’s  really brave, a dip). Book while you can, £55 per person.
