The Old Kennels

Muddy says: we’re totally on board with the idea of a little creative indulgence, but wouldn’t it be lovely if there were a place that took you out of the everyday and into a pretty, peaceful and relaxing space to focus on learning something new? Oh, hello The Old Kennels, the pleasure is all ours.

We’re not about to start preaching to you about switching off the mobile, taking time out and opening your mind up to something new – chances are you’re already on that wavelength, because you’re reading this. And a good job too, because we’re not sure we’ve ever discovered such a breadth of creativity under one rustic roof, until now.

The Old Kennels is a fantastically rural, peaceful spot near Dunkeswell, surrounded by the rolling Blackdown Hills, offering, literally, dozens of creative courses, across the arts and old heritage crafts.  Some, you’ll find are super-useful in your current world, like painting letters for funky signs, or perfecting a show stopping Christmas wreath; others are opportunities to pick up a completely fascinating skill, or learn a forgotten craft. The unifying thing, whatever the course you choose, is that they’re all taught by super-skilled tutors, in the most friendly and relaxing setting. Have you ever tried zoning out from emails and family once in a while and dusting off the brain cells? It’s soooo therapeutic.

If you really feel like immersing yourself in the whole experience, you can, because you can book a room in the cosy Loft Apartment, above the artist’s studio.  If you’re on a course, you can take one of the two rooms, on a B&B basis as they’re let individually; or if you’re just wanting to come and explore as a regular guest (it’s a perfect spot for walkers and cyclists by the way), this is an awesome place to take as a whole 2-bedroom self-catering bolthole, sleeping up to 4, with its own private garden, looking out across the valley.  Someone pass me a corkscrew – I think I’ve just sold it to myself!
