The Thatched Inn, Ilfracombe
Muddy says: Everyone needs a pub like the Thatched Inn in their lives. Cosy, traditional at heart and with the warmest welcome in town, there’s a reason (well, hundreds actually) why these guys are your Muddy Award-winning Pub.
Since she lives up the road and counts as a regular punter, I asked Muddy Commercial Director Emma what she reckons to the 17th century Thatched Inn; well I’ve never seen anyone visibly drool over a memory, but I’ve only just managed to calm her down after getting all up in the air over this award-winning pub’s grub.
The Thatched Inn is a teeny tiny traditional pub at heart, with serious thatchy curb appeal and a fabulous menu, catering to all members of the family, big and small. In the summer you can expect seafood boards and dishes that reflect the town’s seaside location. But the Thatch Burgers are legendary, too, as well as the roasts, arguably the best in Ilfracombe (pork belly and crispy crackling, or Exmoor beef with all the trimmings, anyone?).
Let’s not forget the pubby bit, either. You’ll find they have a stonking drinks selection, including a plethora of gins, many of which are local, like Muddy award-winners Wicked Wolf. If you just want to cradle a pint, or a glass of red, in the winter you can cosy up to the log burner; and for G&Ts and sundowners in the summer, the beer garden takes in views of the sea.
But what really makes this pub stand out from the crowd is the warm welcome. Paul is excellent ‘pub landlord’ material and by his side, Fiona completes a fun couple, who don’t take life too seriously. Pitch up during summer and you might catch Fiona spinning the Balearic beats on the terrace; rock up in the winter and you may get the chance to partake in one of the pub’s Apres Ski nights. Because that’s how the Thatched Inn rolls. And we love it.
