Muddy says: two lovely stores in pretty Dartmoor towns, one passionate wine expert who knows his grapes (and spirits!) and a cracking website, making the personally curated selection of top-notch wines and spirits accessible across the country. Jaded palate? Not a chance.
If you’re not well-versed when it comes to your wine, it can seem a scary topic, right? Rather than risk looking like a numpty, it’s much easier to stick to the same old bottle when you fancy a glass and to pass the buck when you’re handed a wine list. Sound familiar? Then let me introduce you to Jaded Palates.
With two stylish stores with tasting rooms in Ashburton and Chagford trading under the motto ‘great wines, told simply’, owner Ian Renwick is making educating us mere mortals about wine, a pleasure. Having lived – and trained to be a qualified winemaker – in Bordeaux, (Bordeaux!), you can feel pretty assured that the wines and spirits from all around the world on offer at Jaded Palates are worth knowing about and, importantly, drinking.
The stores are a super-relaxed and welcoming place to come when you need advice on choosing a great wine, searching for the newest gin, or perhaps looking to stock up for a special occasion, like a wedding or corporate event; and the best bit is that Ian and Gill know the story behind everything they sell. But if you can’t get to a store, the website is a stylish and comprehensive hub, where you can buy some stonkingly good wines, spirits and gin…lots of gin.
Be sure to check in on the website, too, for info on regular talks and tasting events in the calendar where you can catch Ian sharing all he knows about winemaking, cocktail mixing and spirit supping. You’ll be demanding the wine list and impressing your peers with new-found knowledge in no time. Cheers!
