Where to catch an outdoor movie this summer
Nothing says summer like an alfresco night out watching fab movies under the stars. From gardens to seaside, here’s where to head, popcorn and blanket at the ready.
Newton Abbot Racecourse, Newton Abbot
Three movies brought to you by Adventure Cinema who are popping up at 200 venues around the UK in 2022. The racecourse line-up includes Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story (Fri 12 Aug), Dirty Dancing (Sat Aug 13) and Bohemian Rhapsody (Sun Aug 14). Bring a rug or you can go posh and book a VIP deckchair (which comes with popcorn) and Really Awesome Coffee will be serving delicious snacks, sweet treats and gourmet hot drinks. £14.50pp, VIP tickets £20.50.
Plymouth Arts Cinema at Tinside Lido, Plymouth
Take your seats at Tinside Lido overlooking Plymouth Sound, surely the most amazing spot for a cinema (what do you look at, screen or view??) Run by Plymouth Arts Cinema, they’re decamping to seaside climes from Friday 5 August till Sunday 4 September, for three weekends of outdoor viewing. Films range from Hollywood Classics to cult favourites, kicking off with the new West Side Story on Fri 5 Aug and signing off with Cabaret. You can’t take booze but they run a bar, and Tinside Lido kiosk will also be open for soft/hot drinks and Scooby snacks. Check out the full list here, advance tickets £14 with concessions available.
Arlington Court, Barnstaple
When only Grade II listed grounds will do…head to the 200 year-old neoclassical house for a choice of three showstoppers, including, yep, West Side Story (Jul 29), Mamma Mia! (Jul 30) and – clear your pipes – The Greatest Showman Sing-a-long (Jul 31). Organised by Adventure Cinema, with options on VIP deckchairs, while the venue have a bar offering hot pasties, sausage rolls, sandwiches, ice cream and a variety of other sweet treats and snacks. £14.50pp, £20.50 VIP pp.
Exeter Racecourse, Kennford
Outdoor Cinema are bringing five films on the weekend of 12 – 14 August, including three aimed at under 16s: Bohemian Rhapsody (Fri 12), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Sat 13 aft), Mamma Mia! (Sat 13 eve), The Lion King (Sun 14 aft) and Encanto (Sun 14 5.30pm).
Knightshayes Court, Tiverton
Another weekend organised in conjunction with Adventure Cinema, with Mamma Mia! (Fri 2 Sept), *wands at the ready* Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (Sat 3 Sept) and West Side Story (Sun 4 Sept). £14.50pp, £20.50 VIP pp.
Saltram House, Plymouth
