In a dry January when the weather has turned totally pants and half-term break feels forever away, I take solace by gorging myself on potential holidays. Hot summer holidays in exotic climes with Ryan Gosling (if he’ll only stop moaning on and on about how he desires me), cool city breaks with Mr Muddy, gorgeous cottages in rugged climes for walking hols with my galpals and for family time in the UK, something luxe but active, rural but not too holiday campish.Read more

Hollywood’s awards season officially kicked off last week with the Golden Globes, celebrating the best in TV and movies. I don’t know about you but when I scan the lists of nominees and winners for these things (after I’ve gawped at the red carpet frocks), I make a mental list of cultural catch-up viewing. Too much brilliant stuff to watch, not enough time, so I’ve made it easy for us all – here are my top Golden Globes picks and where to find them.Read more
I’m going to have to learn to get a grip when I blog about hotels. Seriously, what is it about going a bit off-piste and being someone else’s guest for the night that sends me a bit giddy?
But then again, if you can’t be a bit of a kid when you’re checking into a hotel with an Alice in Wonderland theme then, quite frankly, when the hell can you be?Read more

Dry January is dull, I’m boring myself just thinking about it; even saying the words out loud sound like a monotonous drone. But boy can it work wonders; I know from personal experience, having tried it one year, mainly so I could finally part company with my maternity jeans…two years on from the first wear.
This year, while I might (read: probably won’t) make an effort to appease my Fitbit by moving about a bit more, I intend to make sure that at least some of that activity takes me in the direction of a bar or two this January…I just haven’t decided yet whether it’ll be a dry month, a damp one, or a monsoon.Read more
There’s nothing quite like a village drama to rock up in the midst of – and bonus points go to the Millbrook Inn, at South Pool for being a nativity-themed one.
Just before Christmas we took a family excursion to the South Hams, in search of a bit of peace and quiet before the inevitable chaos that would soon ensue with visiting family. (Just as a Muddy aside by the way, I thoroughly recommend a day or two somewhere ‘off-grid’ if you can, to psych yourself up for those mulled wine spillages, roast dinner dramas and the living room always being ‘too damn hot’.)
We took a bracing and soggy morning walk along the beach at East Prawle, then got back in the car in search of an open fire and ten minutes later found ourselves in the village square at South Pool, below.Read more
If you’re looking for a cracking Dartmoor escape that feels a bit Hackney-meets-Wuthering Heights, then I have just the thing for you.
Weeke Barton, meet my lovely Muddy readers!
You can’t get more off the beaten track than this gorgeous guest house, run by a couple who shipped out of London (yes, Hackney funnily enough) to bring up their family in fresh air a few years back and went to town on the old longhouse.Read more
I’m just back from a weekend course at Ashburton Cookery School in south Devon and had to jump straight onto the blogeroo while I’m still on a massive freaking high. It turns out I can cook! Actual food! Incr-Edible!
Anyone who knows me well will chuckle at this statement. I’m the Queen of procrastination; I can usually find a zillion excuses not to spend time in the kitchen at home.Read more
Is it just me, or is it becoming increasingly harder to find the time to lose yourself in a good book these days? This year I’m determined to broaden my reading list beyond celebrity gossip and friend’s status updates and, do you know what, this is the one resolution that I stand half a chance of keeping to, for January at least. It’s been that long since I’ve read anything decent though, so Clare at Dartmouth Bookseller, in the town’s lovely old Foss Street, has kindly recommended her ten top reads to snuggle up with this Jan.Read more
Until recently South Brent was, to me, nothing more than an exit off the A38, on the way to Exeter, where the phone always mysteriously loses signal; my only local knowledge of it being the petrol garage right on the slip road with a notoriously iffy junction to manoeuvre in and out of (yep, that one). I’ve definitely nearly run out of fuel on more than one occasion, to bypass this dodgy spot.Read more
