Beach holidays in Britain always come with that anxious niggle at the back of your head – will it tank down for the whole week? Well, how about an inland lake or river holiday as an alternative? The Muddy editors who happen to be landlocked (*sob**) have scoured their counties for some stonking rental properties with their own little piece of liquid heaven to tempt you throughout spring and summer. One of the big benefits of Muddy tottering its way into so many counties (er, 17 since you asked!) is that we have a raft of on-the-ground experts, squirrelling out the coolest, most useful stuff for the rest of us to plunder. Case in point – beach cottages. Thought about renting one this summer? Yeah me too. So allow me to lay before you a sandy smorgasbord from the Muddy regional editors – 14 beautiful beach properties for the bucket and spade brigade.

Can’t be tossed to find the perfect pancake recipe? Muddy to the rescue!

22 Feb 2017

Every Shrove Tuesday, I say the same thing to the Muddy clan: ‘Why don’t we have pancakes more often? I love pancakes!’  Then we wholeheartedly throw ourselves into a new weekend tradition of Sunday pancakes, which lasts all of, oh, three weeks tops.  And then we forget about pancakes, including how to make them properly.  And repeat annual cycle.

The thing is, practice makes perfect and perfect I am not.  I’m sure half the problem is the fear of ballsing it and the kitchen up, in the process.

Hello Kuku, Pleased to eat you

20 Feb 2017

Cast your minds back to the mayhem of Christmas.  Whilst we were all gorging on stilton and cocktail sausages and tottering out of bars a little bit piddled after the work Christmas do (I saw you), something pretty special happened in Plymouth; a brand new sushi and Japanese restaurant quietly opened its doors, limbering up, ready to do a number on us all come “healthy season”.

Fast forward to Feb and Kuku has elbowed its way to the top of people’s must-visit lists and provided some new energy about town.

She gets 300 – yes, THREE HUNDRED shiny new tomes delivered to her house every month as she’s also books editor at a glossy mag (won’t somebody think of her postman and his lumbago?). Muddy Goes Retro at Sloggett & Son, Plymouth

15 Feb 2017

A few weeks ago, I finally poked my head in to Sloggett & Son on Plymouth’s Union Street.  For those who aren’t local, this is an, um, interesting part of town with an, err, interesting past, involving sailors, a long list of shady clubs and more than a few police vans over the years.  It’s a colourful history alright; but the street also has some fab old buildings that escaped the heavy World War II bombings and, maybe it’s wishful thinking, but I’d love to see it finally shake off its dodgy reputation.

A ridiculously stylish & fun country B&B In East Devon

13 Feb 2017

I’m beginning to notice a familiar pattern forming from my review trips: the weather is always grim. If there isn’t a thick blanket of fog, a force 10 gale and a flood somewhere en route then frankly, it ain’t a Muddy review.  On my recent visit to Old Park Hall, near Axminster, all three criteria were effortlessly fulfilled – and I decided to throw in mild concussion for good measure, having managed to shut the car boot on my head.

On my soap box… about body bashing

Love this piece from Muddy Berkshire, let’s be nice this weekend! x

Wait one second while I hoist up my big pants – but why is it necessary to trash talk ourselves and other women? Whether we are debating the rights and wrongs of Beyoncé’s Insta pregnancy announcement (despite the 10million likes), slagging off a celebrity for losing weight or looking at our reflection lamenting the mum tum that hangs before us – it’s time to stop.

Busted, Plymouth Pavillions, Fri 10 Feb

School’s out and Busted are back, with an all-new grown up look and sound, although I’m pleased to see that Charlie’s eyebrows are still desperately trying to be the fourth member of the band.  The two-time Brit Award-winning trio say they reunited in the studio almost by accident, but it was a happy one because now they have a new album and a UK Headline tour.

Blissful Spa Break: St Moritz Hotel, Cornwall

5 Feb 2017

Sometimes, all that’s needed to break up the monotony is a change of scenery and a few days away from the daily grind.  Fortunately, we’re right next door to Cornwall, (had you noticed that too?), and it turns out you really don’t have to go far to escape either with the kids, with girlfriends or with your beloved, as jammy Muddy Cornwall editor Sophie discovered recently.  She’s been for an uber-relaxing break at the St Moritz Hotel.
